DESCRIPTION:Topic: The Code is the Easy Part OGI School of Science and En
gineering ( map (http://shrinkster.com/wd9) ) 20000 NW Walker Road Bea
verton\, OR 97006 Call this a Public Service Announcement. On the heels o
f publishing his new book\, Code Leader (http://www.amazon.com/Code-Leade
 r-Processes-Successful-Software/dp/0470259248) \, Patrick Cauldwell will b
e presenting at the monthly SPIN (http://www.pnsqc.org/affiliates-partner
s/rose-city-spin) seminar at OGI (http://ogi.edu/) . You must sign up
   - so visit http://www.cpd.ogi.edu/course.asp?n=08-SPIN-0612 and regis
ter. It may seem like it is asking you to pay\, but in the end\, there
is no cost for the event. Details are as follows and posted on the sit
 e (http://www.cpd.ogi.edu/course.asp?n=08-SPIN-0612) . There is a lot m
ore to delivering a software project on time and within budget than just wr
iting code. In fact\, in many modern software development efforts\, the cod
e is the least challenging part. The hard part is setting up a build\, test
and deployment infrastructure that allows developers to work together effe
ctively and efficiently. Working efficiently with your source control sy
stem\, and establishing a Continuous Integration process can go a long way
toward achieving those goals. We'll look at how to organize your team and u
se the right tools to make the development process as efficient and effecti
 ve as possible. \n\n******************************\nfrom FuseCal.com\n***

10260 SW Greenburg Road Suite 600 Portland\, OR 97223 We are invited..
. [From Ben Hickman] The monthly Microsoft Portland SharePoint User Gr
oup meeting will be held on Wednesday May 28th in the Microsoft office.
I am very happy to announce that we will have Jason Noble from Neudesi
c presenting on Master Page development. I saw Jason’s presentation earlier
this year at the Office Developer’s Conference and it was excellent. Don’t
miss this one. Developing Master Pages with SharePoint Designer The Mi
crosoft SharePoint Products and Technologies stack provides amazing out-of-
the-box capabilities for enterprise and web content management\, search\, a
nd business intelligence solutions. These capabilities can be further exten
ded using custom .NET solutions developed in Visual Studio or using the no-
code approach offered by Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2007 . In this di
scussion we will put forth a predictable process for creating master pages
using SharePoint Designer. This will include the creation of wire frames\,
and provide clear direction on the various content regions available in Sha
rePoint. About Jason Noble With over fourteen years of experience in bu
ilding complex\, mission critical applications\, Jason Noble brings extensi
ve knowledge in advanced enterprise applications\, specializing in web\, da
tabase and portal application development using SharePoint. Moreover\, Jaso
n has spent a number of years working with C# and ASP.NET\, creating a vari
ety of business applications\, and has been actively involved with Microsof
t’s .NET environment since it was introduced at the Professional Developer’
s Conference in 2000 . Lunch will be provided and begin promptly at
11:45AM. The presentation will be from 12:00PM to 1:00PM. A meeting
invite is attached. We will have a drawing for some give aways immediat
ely following the meeting\, so bring your Business cards to participate

) This session demonstrates some re-usable tools\, classes and components t
hat every Web Application should integrate. Every application needs a core
set of features\, like managing configuration settings\, handling and repor
ting errors consistently\, logging requests\, providing application status
information\, displaying consistent error and information message pages\, m
anaging application cookies consistently and more. In this session I'll dem
onstrate a handful of useful utility classes and processes that accomplish
these tasks in a reusable fashion and show how they work under the covers.

SUMMARY:Topic: CodeDOM Wells Fargo Center 21st Floor Conference Rooms (ente

DESCRIPTION:Topic: CodeDOM Wells Fargo Center (http://www.mapquest.com/ma

land&state=OR&zipcode=&homesubmit=Get+Map) 21st Floor Conference Rooms (en
ter on 4th Ave) One of the most promising new technologies in the .NET Fr
amework is CodeDom\, which stands for the Code Document Object Model. The
CodeDOM provides classes\, interfaces\, and architecture that can be used
to represent the structure of source code\, independent of a specific progr
amming language. The CodeDOM provides the ability to output each representa
tion as source code in a programming language that the CodeDOM supports\, w
hich can be selected at run time. The CodeDOM plays an important behind
-the-scenes role in the .NET Framework and Visual Studio® .NET. It's also u
sed by ASP.NET to generate executable code\, and in fact it is necessary fo
r a language to implement a CodeDomProvider in order to be used in ASP.NET
pages. The CodeDOM is also used for Web Services Description Language proxy
generation and in the designers and code wizards in Visual Studio .NET.
Paul will delve in the inner workings of the CodeDOM namespace including
some practical examples and how you can harness its potential on your next
project. Paul Kimmel is a talented writer\, speaker\, and software arc
hitect. He writes extensively on best practices in object-oriented program
ming including the recently released SAMS Visual Basic.NET Unleashed\, the
soon to be released Osborne's Advanced C# Programming\, and is a freelance
writer for both Windows Developer Magazine and CodeGuru.com. Paul will als
o be speaking at the Fall Comdex 2002 in Las Vegas\, NV as a Keynote Pa
nelist for COMDEX Great Debate: .NET or .WHAT? .NET is the future of open\
 , interoperable computing\, says Microsoft. No\, say critics\, .NET is a wa
y for Microsoft to co-opt open Web services standards and dominate the Inte
rnet. But how can that be\, if .NET supports the hot open standards like XM
L\, SOAP\, and UDDI? Paul will be championing Microsoft's .NET strategy and
gets at the fundamental question: Is .NET a lock-in strategy for Microsoft
customers? What are the alternatives? In addition\, for the last 15+ ye
ars Paul has architected and implemented numerous client/server\, e-commerc
e and web applications. He is currently the lead architect for a major .NE
T implementation in the Portland\, Oregon metro area\, in addition to his w

to some common SCC packages. The emphasis will be on practices and proced
ures\, not the mechanics of a particular SCC solution. Specific attention
will go to how source control fits into an agile development process and co
ntinuous integration. After completing a Bachelor's degree in the unlik
ely field of East Asian Studies\, Patrick Cauldwell fell into the software
industry. Since then he has written tools that helped Intel localize softw
are into 17 languages\; architected large E-Commerce web sites like 800.com
and gear.com while at STEP Technology\, and spoken nationwide about how to
build large scalable applications. Patrick is currently an architect/deve
loper at Corillian Corporation\, where he designs and develops software for
  online banking.

SUMMARY:Topic: Jump Start Microsoft .NET Development Step Technology 6915 S

DESCRIPTION:Topic: Jump Start Microsoft .NET Development Step Technology
 (http://www.steptech.com/aboutus/map.asp?navarea=contactus) 6915 SW Macada
m\, Suite 200\, Portland OR Every attendee at the local events where dotNE
T developers gather is already gathering "reconnaissance" on .NET and how t
o work with it. All are interested in doing more with less\, particularly
when considering how to migrate legacy applications to Microsoft .NET and t
he web. This presentation will contrast and evaluate two strategies open t
o web application developers: (1) re-tool your legacy Visual Basic applica
tions to run on the .NET framework\, or (2) re-generate them from scratch s
pecific to the .NET platform. Each of these strategies has pro's and con
's. The architecture of web applications is completely different than clie
nt-server applications\, requiring new design thinking as well as new skill
 s. Web applications are used by several internal departments and can be c
ustomer facing\, where on the other hand client-server applications were us
ually created for internal use by one department. This enhanced design can
mean months of additional development work\, and the inclusion of new kind
s of critical features like user authentication and dozens of unique user i
nterface features and page controls. Using an application generation appro
ach\, however\, lets developers jump-start the web application development
cycle\, even if they don't know how to code HTML pages or write SQL queries
. Not a panacea of course\, but application generation is gaining ground
among enterprise IT professionals because it allows web applications to be
rapidly and easily built specifically to the web environment\, instead of
just re-tooling client-server applications. This presentation will inclu
de: a comparison of client server vs. web architecture a review of some
of the challenges of migrating VB applications to VB .NET sample source co
de of a generated application Presenters: Michael Compton is a consultan
t to companies developing web applications on the Microsoft .NET framework.
His 25-year development career includes leading the development of a know
ledge-based expert system to fly on board the Space Shuttle while working a
t the Artificial Intelligence Research Branch at NASA Ames Research Center.
He has also built development tools and expert systems for Teknowledge Co
rporation and Unisys. Michael has taught graduate courses and lectured at
the University of San Francisco\, Stanford University and Sonoma State Univ
ersity\, and has written an introductory book on Robotics. Alan Fisher is
Chairman of Iron Speed\, Inc.\, and a venture capitalist working with ente
rprise software companies. He is a five-time entrepreneur\, and was co-fo
under and CTO of Onsale (now Amazon)\, the first online e-commerce auction
engine\, which he helped build to a $650 mm publicly traded company. D
espite all this\, he remains in close touch with his "inner programmer.''
The pain of building enterprise-class web applications from scratch inspir
ed Alan and his partners to launch Iron Speed and simplify and accelerate w
eb application development. Working with customers of Iron Speed puts Alan
squarely on the pulse of the today's enterprise developer -- he is working
with the folks on the bench every day -- figuring out how Microsoft .NET be
st applies\, and helping developers streamline their development efforts.
Background on Iron Speed\, Inc. Iron Speed opens a whole new category of
web application development\, called Application Generation\, which specif
ically addresses the need for greater productivity\, better resource alloca
tion and more rapid development. \n\n******************************\nfrom

first step towards providing AJAX functionality in ASP.NET 2.0. The mechani
sm provides the ability to have client script code call back on the ASP.NET

how to avoid excessive complexity managing code both on the client and the
